Improved compatibility with bigger Paterson tanks
Although technically speaking, the PIRA film processor has always been compatible with the 5x35mm tanks, in most cases it involved setting a slow motor speed due to the increased mass that needs to be rotated inside, otherwise the internal magnetic disc can “decouple” from the external one at the base.
However we’re now including a very simple and reversible solution to this potential risk.
Every new order comes with a set of six thin neodymium magnets.
Each one is placed inside the machine on top of the existing ones in the rotating base:

Note: Neodymium magnets are fragile! Grab firmly and don’t drop them before touching the bottom as they might fly in and break.
Not all Paterson tanks are identically manufactured, so you might find that only a few magnets are needed, or that you actually need all six of them.
We advise to test in the following configurations by doing a dummy run with plain water and some left over film:

Then choose one where there’s no skipping from the reels. This can be heard as a loud knocking sound.
If you go back to using a smaller tank or the same 5-reel tank but with a smaller load like 3 rolls instead of 5, then we recommend that you remove the magnets to reduce unnecessary wear and friction.
Set the (included) removal tool on top, then slide inwards before lifting up:

Note: Be careful not to push down on the base, as this is a delicate part of the machine.
All PIRA processors should be able to accommodate the extra magnets so if you bought one previously, feel free to ask in the Contact Us page and we’ll send you a set for free along with the removal tool (only pay for mail shipping).
Alternatively, you’re welcome to acquire these magnets elsewhere. The dimensions are 3/8”x1/16” or 10mmx1.5mm
As for the removal tool this part can be 3D printed, you can download the .STL file and instructions here:
